Handball: Doha to host World Schools contest

Hosts Qatar is clubbed in boys Group A at the 24th ISF World Schools Championships Handball following a draw ceremony which was held at the Al Bidda Tower on Wednesday. The event will be held from February 21 to March 1.

Denmark, who finished fourth in the last edition, Austria, Poland and Morocco are the other teams in the group.
Defending champions Turkey, Brazil, Greece, India and Belgium are in Group C.

'We're proud to host the competition and look forward to an interesting championships next year, said Qatar School Sports Association Secretary General Ali Ahmed Al Hitmi.

Runners-up in the 2016 edition, France, who are the most successful sides with six titles, are placed with Croatia, Serbia, Iran and Bulgaria in Group C while Germany, Czech Republic, Romania and Georgia are in Group D.

'Qatar has the potential to host top international tournaments. We always feel confident when Doha hosts big events. The country had hosted the Handball World Championships in 2015. By hosting the competition, the sport will get a major boost, said International School Sports Federation Deputy President Stelios Daskalakis.

Meanwhile, defending champions Denmark, France, Croatia, Belgium and Georgia are placed in Group D of the girls' tournament, which will be its 23rd edition.

Group A has Turkey, Germany, Romania and Bulgaria while Group B consists of Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Czech Republic and India. Slovenia, Brazil, Sweden and Greece complete Group C.
