By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

The position of Russia, and in particular of President Vladimir Putin, in the Jerusalem issue is very important, Murat Akan, Turkish expert on foreign policy, told Trend Dec. 11.

He was commenting on the Russian president's expected visit to Turkey.

On Dec. 11, Putin will pay a visit to Ankara, where he will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Jerusalem's recognition as the capital of Israel will be discussed in the meeting, according to the expert.

'Jerusalem is of great importance not only for Muslims, but for Christians as well,' said Akan.

He noted that if Putin's position on the issue coincides with the UN decisions, the position of the US may get complicated.

'If China also supports the position of the UN and Russia, Jerusalem's recognition as the capital of Israel will not make any sense,' the expert said.

"This will be the seventh meeting of Russian and Turkish presidents during this year, which is no coincidence," Akan added. The expert believes that the meeting of the Russian and Turkish presidents may be considered as a signal about a change in the balance of powers in the world.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump proclaimed that the US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Israel proclaimed Jerusalem its capital after the end of the War of Independence in 1949. In 1967, after the Six Day War, it seized East Jerusalem and united it with the West Jerusalem, but the UN did not recognize this. Embassies of countries that have diplomatic relations with Israel are located mainly in Tel Aviv, Herzliya and Ramat Gan.
