GIS Day 2017 celebrations held


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The GIS Day 2017 celebrations were held in Qatar recently, with the annual get-together of all GIS Geographic Information System professionals in the country being hosted by the Centre for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) under the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) in collaboration with Mannai Trading Co and Esri from the US.
More than 130 GIS, IT and engineering professionals participated. They were from the MME, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Qatar Rail, Qatar Petroleum, Ministry of Interior, Primary Health Care Corporation, Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Internal Security Force and other organisations, according to a press statement. The event was organised to mark World GIS Day.
Manaf Ahmed al-Sada, CGIS director, presented the keynote address and discussed changing trends in GIS technology and how the user base was becoming much wider with the increasing availability of GIS tools and services to government agencies and the general public.
Anwar Hassan, head of GIS Mannai Infotech, highlighted how geography and location played a pivotal role in nationwide decision-making.
International speaker Ian Jackson, former chief of operations at the British Geological Survey, presented aspects pertaining to the use of GIS in various fields and focused on geo-hazards.
Representatives from Ashghal, Health Planning & Assessment (Ministry of Public Health), SC, Qatar Met department CAA, MME and the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, presented case studies and spoke about the key benefits of GIS in day-to-day business decisions, the statement noted.
The presentations were judged by a panel of judges and the results had Ashghal, Health Planning & Assessment and CGIS in the top three positions respectively, while SC bagged the Special Award Application of Geospatial Technology at the National Level.
