(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Some 500 cases of violence against took place in eastern provinces this year, officials said on Sunday.
This was told to participants of a 16-day workshop on preventing violence against women the event's last day in Asadabad, the provincial capital, coinciding with the Human Rights Day, Dec 10.
In addition to women, Kunar provincial council head, a religious scholar, a representative from UNAMA and local Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) officials were present.
Women's support chief at AIHRC eastern chapter, Zahra Rahmani, said about 500 cases of violence against women had been so far registered in the eastern provinces, showing an increase over last year's cases.
UNAMA's human rights section head for the east, Erdem Ozyurek, also spoke on the occasion, saying a total of 39 incidents of honor killing and other murderers were recorded in the eastern zone -- Laghman, Nuristan, Nangarhar and Kunar provinces -- this year. He said 48 women were killed in the incidents and two others were wounded.
He said 27 of the incidents occurred in Nangarhar, six in Kunar, three in Laghman and three in Nuristan. He said police had been unable to arrest criminals in far-flung areas to bring them to justice.
Kunar Police Chief Maj. Gen. Jumma Gul Himmat told the workshop culmination ceremony that police were law enforcers and they had recorded about 31 cases of violence on women this year.
Himmat said of the incidents 18 had been addressed and 17 individuals referred to judicial organs in the cases.
Kunar provincial council head Haji Wilayat Khan said many issues originated from marrying girls in early age and giving them in Ba'ad. He asked all organs to play their role in preventing violence towards women.
However, Kunar women's affairs head Sohaila Babar said violence against the gender had decreased in her province compared to last year, thanks to public awareness efforts. She said only 19 cases were recorded in Kunar this year.
