Camilo Soto, the vastly experienced Argentine coach, yesterday took over as coach of the Qatar national volleyball team.
The 42-year-old was unveiled as the new national team coach at a press conference attended by Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) officials.
A former national player who won the 1995 Pan-American Games gold with Argentina, Soto said: 'It's a good step in my career. I am here to help Qatar national team do well at top international events.
He added: 'I have big challenges ahead of me. We have to prepare for the FIVB Challenger next June followed by the Asian Games event in Jakarta, Indonesia, next August.
Soto said he had prior inputs from fellow Argentine coaches active in Qatar namely Police coach Damian Arredondo.
'I had a fair idea about the game's development in Qatar. I had many interactions before switching to Qatar. This will be my first time with a senior national team, Soto said.
QVA President Ali bin Ghanim Al Kuwari, who was also present, said: 'We welcome Mr Camilo Soto. He is a very experienced coach. We feel.
Soto, 42, has appeared for the Argentine national teams at various levels. He was the skipper of the national U-18 and U-20 teams and won the gold medal with the Argentina squad at the 1995 Pan-America Games.
In the 1998-99 season, he guided his club Olympikus Azul to gold medal in the Argentina national league.
Last year, he was the first assistant to coach Julio Velasco with the Argentina national team. Soto has also managed Finish side Pateri and Turkish club Fenerbache. He played for Picun Leufu.
