Iraq: war with ISIS is over
(MENAFN)Iraqi troops have finally managed to take control of the Iraqi-Syrian border, said Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, speaking to a conference in Baghdad.
The US state department said the fight against the terrorist group would continue, welcoming the end of the "vile occupation" of Daesh in Iraq.
Iraqi authorities announced the defeat of Daesh two days after the Russian military declared it was able to accomplish its mission of eliminating IS in neighboring Syria.
Daesh controlled large territories of Syria and Iraq in 2014, when it established its "caliphate" and forced its rule over some 10 million people.
