Qatar joins the whole world in the observance of Human Rights Day tomorrow and the ‘Stand Up for Human Rights' campaign in the run-up to the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) with the launch of a series of activities aimed at promoting awareness of UDHR at Katara yesterday.
To be launched worldwide tomorrow, which is Human Rights Day, the year-long campaign aims to engage a broad audience around the world, help promote understanding of how the UDHR empowers everyone, and encourage further reflection on the ways that each one can stand up for rights every day. It will culminate on the 70th anniversary of UDHR next year.
'This year is a special year not only for Doha but around the world. Specifically, we want to focus on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We want to increase public awareness on the articles under this Declaration, Abdulla Ali Al Mahmoud (pictured), Head of the Department of Public Relations and Media, NHRC, told local media yesterday.
'It is NHRC's mission to promote and encourage human rights, as well as activate partnerships with other entities like Katara and UN Human Rights center. In general, we have organized activities for children and adults to celebrate the 70th anniversary of UDHR, added Al Mahmoud. A highlight of the three-day event organised by Katara and the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) along with United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is ‘Add your voice', a UN Human Rights project to raise awareness on UDHR using technology to enable a person to record one of the 30 articles in his own language which can be shared through social media.
A wall expressing human rights perspectives, games and workshops for children including painting, colouring, drawing and handicraft are other activities being held during the three-day event.
Katara visitors also enjoyed watching 20 Qatari and expatriate artists create artworks with Human Rights theme at the fine art symposium organized in line with the celebration. Traditional cultural performers from China, Algeria, and Macedonia also staged vibrant folkdances which enthralled the audience at Katara Amphitheatre later in the night. The performances were part of the ongoing Cultural Diversity Festival presented by Katara and the Unesco Office in Doha.
Activities will continue today and conclude tomorrow, Human Rights Day, with a concert of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra featuring Unesco Artist for Peace Marcel Khalife's 'From Symphony of Return: Fourth Movement and the world premiere of ‘Four Seasons' by Naser Sahim. Under the baton of James Shearman, Qatar Philharmonic will also play compositions by Wael Binali and Dana Al Fardan.
