Attorney General and UN special advocate on stolen asset recovery H E Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri stressed yesterday on the importance of the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Award, which coincided with the International Anti-Corruption Day.
He said that the award has garnered international attention and now enjoys great trust around the world, as it contributes to the fight against corruption by helping people take initiative in that regard. His Excellency held a press conference following the award ceremony and said that the State of Qatar continues to cooperate with the UN in the field of combatting corruption and consider it an important part of achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals. He noted that sustainable development can never be achieved while corruption continues to exist in the world.
He maintained however that it was impossible to eliminate corruption all together, but it can be isolated until it becomes an insignificant number. He highlighted Scandinavian countries as a good example in that regard. He also said that it would not be possible for any one country to fight off corruption without strong international cooperation.
Al Marri then said that the increase in the number of winners of the award was a result of the support of the State of Qatar and HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani for issues related to combatting corruption. He noted that the award carries the name of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and so its winner must be a worthy one especially that it is supported by the United Nations. His Excellency also praised the cooperation with the UN, which plays an important and positive role in fighting off corruption all over the world in order to achieve sustainable development.
H E the Attorney General said that Qatar is constantly being targeted whether with claims it supports terrorism or that it mistreats expat workers. His Excellency highlighted that the UN Office in Geneva was the one that responded and said that Qatar was a leader in the field of Labor rights. His Excellency said he expected that the terrorism claims will also be closed soon, as it was a false claim that has no basis. He added that such claims were being propagated due to the success of the State of Qatar in all fields.
