Turkish army killed 20 PKK militants within week

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Dec 8 (KUNA) -- The Turkish army killed 20 militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party within a week during military operations launched on the PKK's positions in Turkey and northern Iraq, General Staff of Turkey said on Friday.

Two leaders of the PKK were killed in the operations carried out in the cities of Diyarbakir, Butlis, Siirt and Sirnak as well as in northern Iraq, the chief of staff added in a statement.

The Turkish forces defused 40 explosives planted by PKK militants and destroyed more than 70 positions, shelters and warehouses of weapons belonging to them, the statement noted.

The Turkish forces have been launching military operations against PKK militants in east and southeast cities, as well as aerial bombardments on their positions in northern Iraq since July 2015.

Meanwhile, Turkish Interior Minister Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu will meet his Iranian counterpart Abdolreza Fazli in Tehran on Saturday (tomorrow), a source at Turkish interior ministry said on Friday.

The two ministers will discuss promoting cooperation on border security, and combating terrorism and smuggling attempts, Turkey's Anadolu Agency quoted the source as saying.

The Iranian-Turkish borders witnessed the killing of an Iranian soldier and the injury of three others last Monday in an armed attack on the Iranian border with Turkey.

The incident comes at a time when Turkey is setting up a "security wall" on the border with Iran to prevent illegal border-crossings. (end) rs.hm
