Egyptians protest Trump's embassy shift

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Dec 8 (KUNA) -- No sooner had Egyptians finished their weekly Friday prayers than they launched rallies, mainly in Cairo and Alexandria, in protest against US President Donald Trump's recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Disgruntled over the US move, the protesters articulated vehement rejection of any action designedly undermining the Islamic and Arab characteristics of the holy city of Jerusalem, Egypt's official news agency (MENA) reported.

They chanted slogans against Trump's controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The irate worshippers called on the international community, together with Islamic and Arab organizations, to take fast-track moves to keep Jerusalem intact.

Furthermore, they urged all Palestinian factions and groups to get united at this very critical time in order to be able to stand firmly in face of Israeli arbitrary measures against the defenseless Palestinian people.

Earlier on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump recognized in a much-anticipated announcement Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Trump also announced that he had directed the State Department to begin preparations to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The US president's decision has sparked wide-scale condemnation and rejection at Arab, Islamic and international levels.

The Palestinian forces called for three days of rage to protest the US move on Jerusalem, which Israel occupied in the June 1967 war.

The UN Security Council is holding an emergency session on Friday in response to a request from eight permanent members of the council to discuss US President's recent decision, a move considered a threat to the peace process.

The session is to be held amidst Arabic and international reactions rejecting and condemning the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Reactions described the decision as illegal, and against the International laws. (end) hdr.mt
