By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

The US urges its citizens to refrain from traveling to Turkey, the Turkish media reported referring to the website of the US Department of State Dec. 8.

The reason is protest rallies which are being held in Turkey after the US recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

A protest rally has been recently held near the US embassy in Ankara. Meanwhile, rallies are expected to be held in a number of Turkey's cities today.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump proclaimed that the US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Israel proclaimed Jerusalem its capital after the end of the War of Independence in 1949. In 1967, after the Six Day War, it seized East Jerusalem and united it with the West Jerusalem, but the UN did not recognize this. Embassies of countries that have diplomatic relations with Israel are located mainly in Tel Aviv, Herzliya and Ramat Gan.
