Turkey's Erdogan proposes making changes to Lausanne Treaty
By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, before his visit to Greece today, proposed to amend the Lausanne Peace Treaty of 1923, Turkish media reported on Thursday.
Erdogan noted that all peace agreements need to be updated over time, including the Lausanne Treaty.
'Making changes to the Lausanne Treaty will benefit not only Turkey, but also Greece. Turkey is ready to discuss the details of the Lausanne Treaty with Greece if it agrees to make such changes,' Erdogan said.
The Lausanne Peace Treaty is one of the main outcome documents of the Lausanne Conference. It was signed on July 24, 1923 by Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Greece, Romania, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes on one side and Turkey on the other.
The treaty established new borders for Turkey, legally formalizing the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire.
The treaty also proclaimed peace between Turkey and the Entente powers.
