Qatar wins silver medal in 2017 World Weightlifting Championships

California: Qatari weightlifter Fares Hassouna won the silver medal in the 94kg category of the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim in the US State of California.

Fares, aged 19, won the medal after he managed to lift 220kg in the jerk. He came in fourth place in the total amid strong competition.

In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Executive Manager of Qatar Weightlifting Federation Mubarak Zayed Al Khayareen said that the victory achieved today is the first for Fares in the senior category, and comes shortly after he won the World Junior Championships in Japan, adding to his 2016 Asian Championship title and seventh placing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

He noted that the Qatari mission to 2017 World Championships in Anaheim was headed by Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani and includes Fares Hassouna and coach Ibrahim Hassouna.
