Full moon supermoon to appear on Sunday

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The supermoon will appear in the Qatar sky on Sunday, Qatar Calendar House (QCH) has said.

Qatar residents have a good chance of seeing the supermoon and do not need any astronomical instruments for this purpose, according to noted astronomer Dr Beshir Marzouk.
The supermoon can be viewed with the naked eye between the moonrise time over the eastern horizon and the moonset time in the western horizon. The moon will rise in the Doha sky at 4.49pm on Sunday and the full moon phase will occur at 6.47pm, Dr Marzouk explained, adding that the moon will set at 6.31am the next day.
The point in the moon's orbit closest to Earth is called perigee, while the point in the orbit farthest from Earth is known as apogee.
A supermoon occurs when a full moon or new moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth, also known as perigee. The December 3 phenomenon is classified as a ‘full moon' supermoon.
On the other hand, a micromoon occurs when a full moon or new moon coincides with apogee; the point in the moon's orbit farthest away from Earth.
Due to the moon's elliptical orbit, the distance between the moon and Earth varies throughout the month and the year. The distance is about 382,900km on an average, while on Sunday it will be 357,987km.
The supermoon will happen again on January 2, 2018.
