Farmers' panel will help boost local food production


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Cabinet decision to establish a standing committee for farmers and the regulation of farmers' affairs is expected to further enhance agriculture production in the country.
Yousef al-Khelaifi, director of the Agriculture Affairs Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), told local Arabic daily Arrayah that this is considered among the most important decisions aimed at boosting local production and achieving self-sufficiency in local food production. He pointed out that the committee would meet soon after a decision to form it by HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment is issued.
Al-Khelaifi said the committee will be chaired by MME's assistant undersecretary for agriculture and livestock affairs, the vice-chairman will be the director of the agriculture affairs department, and the agriculture research director will be the secretary of the committee. The committee will include two members representing MME, a member representing the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, a representative of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), and three representatives of the local farm owners to be selected by the Minister of Municipality and Environment.
He further pointed out that new committee will take care of all the issues related to farmers' affairs, the development of livestock wealth and the support of marketing local agriculture and animal products.
Al-Khelaifi affirmed that the country provides local farms and farmers with all the necessary types of support, and consider such sector as vital for the national economy. This has led to the growing role of such sector in supplying the food needs of the country.
Regarding any potential increase of the current number of local farms, he stressed that the already available number is enough. However, more focus would be given to improve production and make inactive farms active producers.
