The three-day honey festival, which is organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment's Agricultural Affairs Department, started yesterday at Mazrouah Yard in Umm Salal with the participation of a number of local farms and wide public participation from citizens and residents.

Agricultural Affairs Department Director Youssef Khalid Al Khulaifi highlighted the event, which is the first in the 2017-18 agricultural season and sees the participation of 25 Qatari farms. More than six tonnes of local honey is expected to sell during the festival. Al Khulaifi said, after Mazrouah Yard, the festival will continue at Al Khor and Al Dhakira Yard and then at Al Wakrah Yard. The events aim at marketing the local honey product of Qatari farms and supporting them to compete with the foreign products, while attracting the public to the yards in order to support the production of vegetables and fruits.

He said that the different products of Qatari honey are excellent in terms of quality and diversity, noting that several farms have doubled their production over the past few years with constant support from the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. He added that this year's edition is distinguished by increased production and interest from local farms compared to previous years, with the number of participating farms growing from six in the first edition to 26 this season.

For his part, Abdulrahman Al Sulaiti, the general supervisor of agricultural product yards, said the goal of holding the events at yards is to diversify products and allow consumers the choice, while also supporting local farms to diversify their production and techniques and develop the implemented mechanisms so as to compete with other foreign products.

Al Sulaiti added that the ministry supports the different Qatari farms with bee farms as well as guidance and awareness. The festival is an opportunity to introduce the local honey project and provide high-quality Qatari honey. The ministry started to take interest in bee farming in 2013 at Qatari farms.
