By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Turkey has achieved serious results in the fight against terrorism, the country's Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said, the Turkish media reported Dec. 1.

'Turkey, as before, will actively fight terrorism, because the most important thing for us is to ensure safety of our citizens,' Yildirim said.

He noted that the region in which Turkey is located is going through a difficult period.

'At present, Turkey is fighting not only the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party), but also the 'Islamic State' (IS) terrorist group,' Yildirim said.

He added that the PKK has almost lost its power, but this doesn't mean that the Turkish security forces will soften the fight against terrorists.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for more than 30 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

The UN and the European Union list the PKK as a terrorist organization.

On Aug. 24, 2016, Turkish Armed Forces, with the support of the Syrian opposition, launched the Euphrates Shield operation against the IS militants and liberated the city of Jarabulus as well as the city of Al-Bab in northern Syria.
