Turkey dispatches commandos to N. Syrian city

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Nov 30 (KUNA) -- Turkey has sent 180 commandos to the Syrian city of Al-Bab within the "Euphrates Shield" Ankara launched in August 2016, the military said Thursday.

The troops from the gendarmerie's "Wolves" battalion, based in the Black Sea province of Tokat, held a leaving ceremony before heading for Syria, it added.

Al-Bab lies 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Aleppo.

The commandos' role in the city was not revealed but the deployment came more than a month after Turkish troops entered Syria's Idlib province under plans to establish de-escalation zones across the war-torn country.

Meanwhile, Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said today that the Turkish troops would not hesitate to enter the city of Afrin, northern Aleppo, or any other place that forms a threat to his country.

The arms offered by the US to the Democratic Union Party (PYD) represent the biggest threat against Turkey, he added. (end) rs.msa
