(MENAFN)Turkish local media reported Tuesday 57 Pakistani migrants were rescued by the police after being chained up in an Istanbul basement by thieves trying to extort money.
According to Hurriyet daily, the smugglers tried to fool the migrants convincing them that they would be taking to Europe for $10,000, with the money to be paid after they arrived.
The newspaper said that some of the migrants found on Monday had been tortured.
Three smugglers of Pakistani origin were also seized by the police, claimed to have been misleading the migrants during the raid on the European side of the city.
