CAF to Use Video Assistant Referee for First Time in Morocco's CHAN

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) Rabat - African national football teams of local players will battle for the 2018 Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) title accompanied by video assistant referee (VAR) technology, for the first time in a Confederation of African Football (CAF) competition. According a press release published by CAF on November 28, the usage of this technology will be implemented starting in the 2018 edition of the competition, scheduled to take place January 13 to February 4. "The usage of the latest technology was okayed by the CAF Referees' Committee" during a meeting held on November 27 in Cairo, Egypt, said the confederation. Suleiman Waberi, who chairs the referee committee, underscored during the meeting the importance "to make collective decisions to improve officiating on the continent," according to the press release. "Today we are going to make some very important decisions that will be pivotal for the future of refereeing in Africa," Waberi said. "[The committee] will launch major projects to meet the challenges ahead." Among the other decisions taken was "the obligation for all Member Associations to have a functional Refereeing Department," according to the statement. African referees selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup with previous training in VAR "will be called upon for the tournament designed exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues." The committee has also adopted a four-year action plan to be sent to the FAC executive Committee, "including the conclusion a working group on the revision of allowances and the mode of payment of referees designated in CAF competitions." The CHAN matches will be played in four stadiums of four Moroccan cities: Tangier, Marrakech, Casablanca, and Agadir. Sixteen African teams including Morocco are set to face off during the competition. According to the results of the draw of CHAN, which took place earlier this month, the Moroccan national team has been placed in Group 1 along with Guinea, Sudan, and Mauritania. "
