Syrian regime to join peace talks in Geneva Wed.

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) AMMAN, Nov 28 (KUNA) -- The Syrian government has confirmed that its delegation will be attending a fresh round of UN-sponsored peace talks due Wednesday in Geneva.

The Syrian government's delegation will arrive in Geneva on Wednesday "to participate in the eighth round of inter-Syrian talks," the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted a source at the Syrian foreign ministry as saying.

The Syrian government has decided to join the talks after "extensive discussions" with Russia, with a delegation headed by Syria's UN ambassador and chief negotiator Bashar Al-Jaafari, the source added.

Meanwhile, the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has stressed that the international community's support is crucial for progress on the Syrian peace talks.

With seven rounds previously held, the Geneva talks offer another chance to end a six-year conflict that has remained largely unabated. (end) tk.nam
