Afghanistan- Peace Council sanguine on S. Arabia's 'peace meet'

(MENAFN - Afghanistan Times) AT-KABUL: The High Peace Council has voiced optimism over the upcoming religious meeting scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia, calling it 'important' to help endthe conflict and bring peace to the war-weary nation. The council's spokesman, Sayed EhsanTaheri, said Tuesday that clerics from 36 Islamic countries were scheduled to attend the meeting and evaluate the war in Afghanistan from Islamic aspect. 'Clerics and representatives from the Muslim world are to attend the meeting including a delegation from Afghan religious scholars. They will discuss the war in Afghanistan from the Islamic perspective and its benefit will undoubtedly come to the people of Afghanistan in helping for peace and stability,' said Taheri. The two-day meeting would be organized by the Organization of Islamic Conference in the Saudi cities of Jeddah and Mecca. According to the peace council the meeting would be held by the end of July. Thousands of religious scholars in a meeting condemned the Afghan war as illegal last month in Kabul. They called on the war sides to stop fighting and restore peace and dialogue. Prior to that, clerics from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indonesia, asked Taliban in a meeting in Jakarta to join the Afghan government's peace program. 'I am doubtful if the Pakistani clerics attend the Saudi meeting, because they are under influence of their country's intelligence service that is using religion as a political tool and the role of Pakistani clerics would be symbolic. But the clerics from other countries can play useful role in the meeting and I am hopeful they would find a solution for the war,' said political analyst, DawoodMayar. Taliban have frequently rejected government's peace demand, emphasizing on the withdrawal of foreign troops as their precondition. President Ashraf Ghani said on Saturday that he had answered to the religious scholars' request positively and it is the Taliban to answer them now.
