(MENAFN - Gulf Times) On a day-long trip to the capital, actor Kamal Haasan yesterday met Congress president Rahul Gandhi and discussed the political situation in Tamil Nadu, where he has floated a new political party Makkal Needhi Maiyam.
'We did discuss politics but not the way you think, he told reporters after the meeting which he initially described as a courtesy call.
To a question on whether an alliance between his party and the Congress in Tamil Nadu was discussed, Kamal said: 'We did not discuss that.
On his part, Gandhi tweeted about the meeting: 'Enjoyed meeting Kamalhaasan in Delhi. We discussed a wide range of issues concerning our two parties including the political situation in Tamil Nadu.
Earlier in the day, Kamal met officials in the election commission about the registration of his party and expressed confidence the process would be over soon.
Asked when the process of the registration would be over, Kamal said: 'It will come to a logical conclusion very soon. They (the election commission officials) said they would decide in a week or 10 days.
The actor said he had not asked for an election symbol as that would be decided later.
The actor also slammed the Tamil Nadu government for arresting people protesting against the eight-lane green corridor between Chennai and Salem.
'To treat anyone talking about environment as a crime is not acceptable. This concern should be there among all, he told reporters when asked about his views on the raging controversy over the proposed expressway connecting the two cities.
The Tamil Nadu police has been accused of indiscriminate and arbitrary arrests of people and activists protesting against the project on the ground that thousands of hectares of land of agriculturists and others would be acquired, leaving them in the lurch.
