Jordan- Murder rises in Ramadan, traffic accidents lower

(MENAFN - Jordan News Agency) Amman, June 19 (Petra) –– The number of murders handled by the Department of Criminal Investigation and police during the holy month of Ramadan has increased, compared with the same period last year, while traffic accidents and related deaths and injuries over the Eid Al Fitr Holiday have decreased, according to the Public Security Department (PSD).

PSD spokesman, Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi, said that various police departments have dealt with 15 murders in Ramadan this year, compared with 8 in the same month last year, noting the huge efforts and high security costs to address the crimes.

He said that according to security statistics, five murders occurred in the capital, three in the Irbid Governorate and two crimes in each of the Zarqa, Balqa and Tafila governorates and one crime in Karak, adding that all cases were referred to the judicial authorities.

The spokesman said that most of the killings were the result of brawls resulting from personal or family feuds.

Regarding traffic accidents, Sartawi pointed out that Central Traffic Department statistics indicated a decrease in the number of road accidents over the Eid Holiday with 1,249 accidents recorded in which 8 were killed and 111 injured, including 10 seriously, compared to 1,449 in the Eid Holiday last year, which left 16 dead and 255 injured, 32 seriously.

The spokesman owed the drop in accidents to a strict traffic plan introduced especially for the Eid Holiday and efficient traffic controls on highways in addition to icreased traffic awareness and discipline of both motorists and pedestrians.
