Two Filipino maids found dead in Lebanon and Saudi

(MENAFN- Asia Times) Two Filipino domestic workers apparently committed suicide this month, one in Lebanon and the other in Saudi Arabia, the Philippine government has reported.

On Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement that a worker in Lebanon jumped from her employer's sixth-floor apartment on June 11, and a second woman apparently hanged herself at her employer's home in Saudi Arabia the next day.

'We are deeply saddened by the news that two of our compatriots reportedly decided to take their own lives while working abroad and away from their families,' Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said.

The DFA said the Philippine embassies in Beirut and Riyadh were coordinating with authorities to investigate the two cases and would see to it that there was no foul play in the deaths of the two women.

Cayetano said the DFA would extend assistance to the families of the two domestic workers, including repatriation of their remains as soon as possible.
