Manila bolsters ties with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain

(MENAFN- Asia Times) Philippine government officials have reached out to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to maintain relations and safeguard the welfare of Filipino workers in the two countries.

Foreign Affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano met last week with the Filipino community in Saudi Arabia and Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported. Nearly a million Filipinos work in the Saudi kingdom.

On Sunday, Cayetano crossed to Bahrain for a two-day official visit and met with Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa. He said the Bahrain government had taken several initiatives to further protect the rights and welfare of Filipinos in the country.

'Prime Minister Khalifa told us that we have nothing to worry about as far as out workers are concerned and he even gave his personal assurance that his office will deal with any problem that may involve our countrymen,' Cayetano said.

'We are going home with assurances from the Crown Prince, the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister of Bahrain that they are friends and partners the Philippines can count on,' he said.
