'Friendly' fire kills Israeli soldier


(MENAFN) On Wednesday, a 20-year-old Israeli soldier died in a friendly fire incident at a military base in the country, the army announced.

Sergeant Shachar Strug was killed by a bullet which was fired from the gun of his fellow soldiers; an investigation has been launched into the incident, MEM reported.

Strug, from Unit 217 the Duvdevan unit, is due to be buried today.

He was rushed to hospital after being hit by the bullet at the Central Command of the Israel Defence Forces. He was in a critical condition and was announced dead shortly after his arrival.

His unit is known for its undercover operations in the occupied West Bank where they often wear Arab civilian clothing as a disguise.

The unit performs many high-risk and complicated operations, including targeted murders, kidnappings, and a range of other undercover operations in Arab areas.
