The contract for the construction of second Kabul-Jalalabad highway was signed four years ago and the construction process was expected to complete in three years.

However, this road is still remained incomplete.

Residents of Surkh Rod, Khogyani, Sherzad and Hesarak districts of Nangarhar were faced with huge transportation problems and they have to spend long hours for traveling to the provincial capital.

In protest to the government's inaction for construction of the second Kabul-Jalalabad highway, around 200 civil society activists, tribal elders and residents of Surkh Rod district on Friday covered the unconstructed areas of the route with clay.

One of the protest organizers, Burhanuddin Sirat told Pajhwok Afghan News that the aim of covering the road with mud was to reproach the government for its failure.

He said that the road construction had to complete in three years after its contract was signed, but four years were on and the road was still incomplete.

Hamid Mahmodi, another participant of the protest, said that the highway was used by people from four districts of Nangarhar and they were faced with many problems due to the road's bad condition.

Hafizullah Ghairat, another protestor criticized the government and said that they would continue their demonstration if the government does not start work on construction of the road in the near future.

Meanwhile, Nangarhar governor's spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani said that construction of the road was suspended due to some technical reasons.

He confirmed 80 percent of the project was still incomplete but added the local administration could not permit resumption of work on it unless transparency and quality was ensured.
