Boy in critical condition with influenza A infection

A 10-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital with influenza A, which has killed 315 in Hong Kong since the start of this year. The Center for Health Protection, which diagnosed the influenza A infection in the boy, said his case was complicated because he also had encephalopathy.

According to , the boy had a fever and started vomiting on Friday. He was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kowloon's Jordan on Sunday and then transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit.

He tested positive for influenza A (H1) and his situation was complicated by encephalopathy. The boy, who had not been vaccinated against flu, was in a critical condition.

His elder sister had the symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection and was in a stable condition.

A total of 510 severe influenza cases have been recorded from the beginning of this year and the death toll from the epidemic has reached 315.

Meanwhile, two schools in Macau have recorded flu outbreaks. Five boys and eight girls aged between four and seven showed flu symptoms including fever, coughing and sore throats, the Macau Daily News reported.

All the infected students had not had flu vaccinations.
