(MENAFN- Asia Times) The Kuwaiti and Philippine governments will sign a new agreement to ensure that Filipino domestic workers are protected and their rights respected in Kuwait.
Renato Pedro Villa, the Philippine ambassador to Kuwait, said the two countries would have a meeting to discuss the situation of Filipinos working in Kuwait, reported.
Villa said the new agreement for domestic workers would ensure that their rights are protected and that they are prevented from any abuse or physical assault.
The new agreement comes after the discovery of the body of a maid – Joanna Demafelis – in a freezer in an apartment in Kuwait. She was allegedly beaten to death by her employers, who fled the country in late 2016.
The Kuwaiti government has vowed to exert all efforts to bring justice for Demafelis' family. The government and Interpol are tracking her employers – a Lebanese man and his Syrian wife – for the murder of Demafelis.
The mother of the Lebanese man has claimed that her son is innocent and that his wife had badly treated the domestic worker, reported.
'My son is a quiet and reasonable man, unlike his wife, who I realized was cruel and badly treated the maid when I visited them in Kuwait,' she said.
Demafelis' body was sent home to Iloilo in the center of the Philippine archipelago on Friday.
