(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) As many as 109,369 surveillance cameras have been installed on all the roads and squares here in a bid to boost safety and security across the emirate.
According to a top officer, these cameras keep a watch on every nook and corners of the emirate round the clock as part of an integrated smart system.
Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, said: "We have managed to arrest so many criminals, suspects and violators, and curb down crimes in a significant way with the help of these cameras that cover the entire emirate."
The CCTV cameras have been installed in 16,867 buildings as part of the 'Himaya' or 'Protection' system.
The comprehensive surveillance system has been instructed by His Highness Shaikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, to enhance safety, security, and stability in the emirate.
"The Himaya system will be connected with the radar and geographic information systems, visual early warning connectivity and ANPR car identification systems."
Maj-Gen Nuaimi said all the said buildings, roads and areas are now observed the law No. 3/2015 under the supervision of the RAK Police and the General Resources Authority.
"These entities include a big number of centres, shops, establishments, government departments, public institutions, mosques, hospitals, schools, hotels, rest houses, jewelry shops, villas, as well as residential towers and buildings."
He added: "This is a record achievement that reflects a complete awareness of the importance of the Himaya System."
Maj-Gen Nuaimi said the move is in line with a global scheme that depends on advanced technological systems to enhance security. "The new system helps detect and curb crimes, track and catch criminals in a record time."
Brigadier Jamal Ahmed Al Tair, chairman of the general resources authority, RAK, said they have accredited 94 service providers targeted for the job.
"We have also qualified and trained hundreds of engineers and technicians at the American University in RAK so that they can professionally sell and instal the CCTV cameras in all buildings across the emirate."
"The General Resources Authority, in collaboration with the Licensure Section of the RAK Police, is launching regular inspections against all institutions to ensure their compliance with the new system."
