Kuwait- UN chief, Amiri Diwan Advisor tackles humanitarian issues, challenges


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Feb 3 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Kuwait's Amiri Diwan Special Advisor and President of the International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) Abdullah Maatouq, discussed Sunday at New York a number of humanitarian issues and challenges, including Iraq Reconstruction Conference, which will be hosted by Kuwait on February 12.

Al-Maatooq, who is also UN Secretary General Special Advisor, told KUNA on the sidelines of the meeting that his visit aimed at tackling means of cooperation and coordination on various crises, humanitarian aspects, and repercussions, including the importance of international community in alleviating the humanitarian complications of disasters and conflicts.

He stressed keenness on Kuwait support through its charitable societies to continue cooperation with the United Nations and its specialized agencies and to continue their support to afflicted people suffering from the scourge of homelessness and displacement or even those who found shelter in camps.

Al-Maatooq added that he extended his sincere thanks and appreciation to the Secretary-General for responding to the invitation of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to attend the Kuwait International Conference on Iraq Reconstruction scheduled for February 12-14.

He noted that he discussed with the Secretary General the efforts of the International Islamic Charitable Organization to mobilize local, regional and international organizations in the conference of NGOs to support the humanitarian situation in Iraq, hoping that the conference will succeed in meeting the needs of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi families, including whose who live in camps.
