CAIRO, Jan 17, (KUNA): Understanding the very essence of the holy city of Jerusalem is key to political certainty, Kuwait's National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim said on Wednesday.

Addressing the 'Al-Azhar International Conference to Support Jerusalem', Al-Ghanim spoke of Kuwait's tireless pursuit of justice, in reference to Palestinian aspirations for statehood. 'Amid the uproar over the Jerusalem issue, we should never overlook the struggle and adversity facing the Palestinian people,' Kuwait's chief lawmaker told a packed audience comprising political and religious figures from across the world. On 'a highly emotional Jerusalem issue,' he said that it 'has tugged the heartstrings of people', stressing that even the most subtle of actions would go a long way in supporting Palestinian resistance.

'Understanding the nature of Jerusalem would help explain the meaning this holy city holds,' Al-Ghanim underlined, exclaiming, 'Palestinians would ultimately emerge victorious.' Meanwhile, Egyptian President Abdelfattah el-Sisi received on Wednesday Speaker of Kuwait National Assembly Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim. President el-Sisi welcomed the speaker, asking him to convey his greetings to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al- Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, said the presidential spokesman, ambassador Bassam Radi, in a statement.

He also affirmed during the meeting that the Kuwaiti-Egyptian ties have remained solid and distinguished, reiterating Cairo's desire to boost mutual cooperation at various levels. The spokesman said that the president praised Kuwait's stances toward Egypt at the political and economic levels, adding that he noted necessity of beefing up the parliamentary relations between the two countries.

For his part, speaker Al-Ghanim relayed greetings from His Highness the Amir to president el-Sisi and Kuwait's keenness on boosting the ties and cooperation with Cairo. Speaker Al-Ghanim eyed highly Egypt's role in the region as 'basis of the Arab nation's security and stability,' the spokesman elaborated.

Furthermore, the Egyptian president has reiterated that he views the Gulf security as connected with that of Egypt. The meeting was attended by the Egyptian parliament speaker, Dr. Ali Abdelal, and the State of Kuwait Ambassador to Egypt, Mohammad Al- Thuwaikh. Al-Azhar's Grand Imam Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayyeb said Wednesday that there should be an Arab and Muslim revival of public awareness of Jerusalem and holy sites in Palestine.

The call was made by Egypt's top Muslim cleric during a conference to support Jerusalem in response to US President Donald Trump's recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

Arab, Muslim and international dignitaries are participating in Al-Azhar International Conference in Support of Jerusalem, which kicked off in Cairo today. Kuwait's Permanent United Nations Representative Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi has taken part in an official three-day United Nations Security Council visit to Afghanistan.

The visit, between January 13 and 15, is the first carried out by the UN organ since 2010 and aims to renew its commitment to Afghan 'efforts on the ground to achieve security and stability in facing political and security challenges,' read a statement by the Kuwaiti UN mission Tuesday. Ambassador Al-Otaibi, along with fellow UNSC member country representatives, attended talks with the Afghan political leadership, including President Ashraf Ghani and National Unity Government Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah.
