Pakistan- ECP cancels registration of 284 political parties


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has cancelled the registration of 284 political parties over not following the Election Act 2017.

Prominent parties among those whose registration has been cancelled include the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), National Party and Pakistan People's Party-Patriot. The Election Commission had sought Rs200,000 fee, identity card numbers of 2,000 party members and fingerprints from these parties. However, these parties failed to fulfil these requirements after which their registration was cancelled.

The ECP said in a statement that the political parties can file appeal against this decision in the Supreme Court of Pakistan within a month. It is first time that the ECP has cancelled the registration of such a large number of political parties.
