Mobile food vendors are doing brisk business in Doha as more people venture outdoors to take advantage of the pleasant weather.
The first food truck in Doha was Burgeri, a Qatari brand inspired by the vintage American diner offering burgers, hotdogs and fries among others, launched two years ago. Since then, the number of mobile food vendors have grown.
The food trucks and carts which are set up at the ongoing Souq Waqif Spring Festival are a good sign this business is fast becoming a lucrative venture in the country.
More than 30 food trucks and carts can be seen around Souq Waqif, most of which are located near the festival venues which are frequented by many people. While some of them have been doing business in the Souq for quite some time, a number of them were set up especially for the festival which runs until April next year.
Many Souq Waqif visitors were seen yesterday lining up the various food carts which offer a wide array of scrumptious snacks such as burgers, crepes, waffles, corn and potato rolls as well as beverages including juice slash, smoothies, karak and coffee, among others.
'I like coming to Souq Waqif because of the variety of food available in food carts everywhere. Some of the food are unique and can't be found in restaurants and sold at affordable prices , said Sally, one of the customers who sampled potato rolls.
Another customer Darcy expressed appreciation of the delicious taste and unique flavours of food on offer at the food carts.
'Chocolate crepe is simply amazing, perfect with hot karak during the cold weather, she said. Apart from Souq Waqif, food carts and trucks can also be found at popular public places such as the Cultural Village Foundation- Katara and Aspire Zone. Qatar Museums have also announced several food trucks will soon be stationed at the Museum of Islamic Art.
These mobile food vendors have also become a regular feature at a number of events such as the recently concluded Aspire Lake Festival and Qatar's Strongest Man which proves the rising demand for the food they offer catered to various tastes of foodies.
Food is one of the features of this year's Souq Waqif Spring Festival, which is the longest of its kind organized by Souq Waqif. More than 60 attractions including 36 games and amusement rides, some of which were brought for the first time to the festival, have been a magnet for huge crowds in the past several days since the festival was launched.
Running for four months, Souq Waqif Spring Festival had its soft opening on Monday and is set for official launch tomorrow.
