Los Angeles CA The Baron Jay Foundation (BJF) presents Summer Arts Filmmaker Internship Program (SAFIP) designed as an innovative groundbreaking 21stst Century educational job training program free to enrollees. The promise: To train Los Angeles area high school students from low to moderate income households about film production.
Baron Jay Foundation’s twelve week Summer Arts Filmmaker Internship Program and its 40-member team has joined President Barack Obama and SAG-AFTRA in A Call to Arts: The One Million Mentor Hours Pledge to reach out to young people pursuing careers in the cinematic arts. This national effort aims to generate more than a million hours of mentoring over the next three years.
Baron Jay Foundation founder Baron Jay Littleton Jr. stated that “Each of the 40 SAFIP team members have committed to 120 hours each of mentoring through the Summer Arts Filmmaker Program which will total 4800 hours.”
Actor/producer Littleton wants to teach students how science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) relate to filmmaking. Job functions to be experienced are Production Camera Sound Grip Set Lighting Art Set Dressing Property Make-up/Hair Costume Mobile APP Website technology and much more.
“The best way to learn is through experience and that means hands-on job shadowing” LeBron James commented in his game three post interview after his NBA team the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors on June 9 2015.
SAFIP will offer a route of self-expression for L.A.-area students who may have been stifled by the lack of opportunity and exposure to an entertainment industry right in their own backyards. Students will learn to think on many different levels: planning follow-through equipment operation crew support and many other job titles seen when credits roll at the end of a movie or television show.
Students will job shadow a variety of professional entertainment industry teachers and administrators on the set of a television sitcom entitled MI CASA MI CASA written by Kantz Candance Green and Chris Moore from Tyler Perry’s HOUSE OF PAYNE and MEET THE BROWNS. Actor/Director Kent Faulcon series regular “Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse” and SELMA is on board to direct the multi-episode project. Faulcon says “I’m always excited about the process. Having worked with such great directors like Tyler Perry Spielberg Sonnenfeld and so many great others that have influenced me I look forward to helping bring this new voice and perspective to television entertainment. And to do this while at the same time broadening the horizons of some well deserving youth I really couldn’t ask for a more rewarding situation.”
MI CASA MI CASA is about an African American couple Metro Train Driver and ultra conservative George Mayweather and his elementary school wife Gladys Mayweather lives are turned upside down when their daughter Kimberly returns to the nest with her very liberal “Mexican” husband Ramone Cervantes. Stanley and Ramone clash about politics race social agendas and Government. The two can’t agree on anything and Stanley’s peaceful abode is about to get a little Latin spice!
Littleton commented that President Obama’s daughter Malia Obama is interested in filmmaking and had the golden summer job opportunity to work on Halle Berry’s show EXTANT on CBS produced by prominent Obama donor Steven Spielberg. Obama helped with computer shop alignments and assisted crew by blocking people from walking through scenes during shooting. The director also let her slate a take.
Obama commented on her first job: “My first time. This is a big deal.”
Littleton hopes his summer program will similarly inspire L.A. students. “When students parents and teachers hear about our program they get very excited and asked how much it costs and I tell them it’s free. They can’t believe it. Summer programs at USC New York Film Academy LA Film School and others are very expensive. The demographics we serve can’t afford that cost nor do they have insider relationships such as Malia Obama’s.”
Littleton adds: “I am a product of the students we serve. Growing up in Detroit Michigan I had a similar opportunity from the Detroit Video Workshop and Detroit Council of the Arts.”
BJF foundation partners are Byron K. Reed of Wells Fargo Robert K. Ross and Mary Lou Fulton of the California Endowment.
Says Littleton: “Without their support and believing in me our program wouldn’t be possible. Our students also will also attend a lunch and learn at One West Bank Entertainment Office in Santa Monica California in July to meet with executives. This was set up by President/CEO Joseph Otting of One West Bank.”
Littleton adds: “Our experience and insight are invaluable to the creative voices who will be the architects of tomorrow’s culture. Every great artist is inevitably asked ‘What are your influences? Who inspired you?” Our goal is to help change the world for the better one student at a time.”
