US Defense Chief Reports Improved China Ties After Trump–Xi Meeting
(MENAFN) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Saturday that ties between Washington and Beijing have shown signs of improvement following a recent meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, while stressing the need for stronger defense commitments from regional allies, particularly Japan.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue 2026 in Singapore, Hegseth described the Trump-Xi summit as a constructive development that has helped ease tensions between the world's two largest economies.
He said the United States remains committed to maintaining productive relations with China while continuing to support a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Despite the more positive diplomatic atmosphere, Hegseth cautioned against underestimating China's growing military capabilities. According to reports, he emphasized that countries in the region must continue strengthening their own defense capacities to ensure stability and maintain effective deterrence.
Addressing Japan's security posture, Hegseth welcomed recent increases in defense spending by Japan but indicated that further progress is necessary to meet the country's strategic objectives.
"Japan is moving in the right direction," he said, adding that the country has not yet reached its defense goals.
His remarks reflect Washington's broader push for allies in the Indo-Pacific to assume a greater share of regional security responsibilities amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
