The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside White House grounds. Authorities said the individual pulled a firearm from a bag and began shooting in the area.

Secret Service officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was later taken to hospital and pronounced dead. Officials also confirmed that a bystander was injured in the shooting, while no law enforcement personnel were hurt.

The suspect was identified in US media reports as 21-year-old Nasire Best, with officials cited as saying he had prior encounters with law enforcement and a documented history of mental health concerns.

Authorities also noted that he had previously been arrested after entering a restricted area near the White House and had made unusual statements during earlier incidents.
