Gunman Shot Dead After Allegedly Opening Fire Near White House

(MENAFN) A man was fatally shot by US Secret Service agents Saturday evening after drawing a firearm and opening fire steps from the White House perimeter, as a civilian bystander was caught in the crossfire, authorities confirmed.

The Secret Service said the confrontation erupted shortly after 6 p.m. ET (2200 GMT) near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House grounds. The individual "pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing," the agency stated.

Officers responded immediately. "Secret Service Police returned fire striking the suspect who was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. During the shooting one bystander was also struck by gunfire," the agency said, adding that no officers sustained injuries. The bystander's condition remained unknown Saturday evening.

Media, citing six senior law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation, named the suspect as Nasire Best, 21. Five of those officials told media that Best had a documented mental health history alongside prior contact with local law enforcement.

Court records show Best was previously charged with unlawful entry after allegedly breaching a restricted White House perimeter zone on July 10 — an incident in which, according to filings, he claimed to be Jesus Christ and stated he wished to be detained.

President Donald Trump was confirmed to be inside the White House at the time, with the Secret Service stating "no protectees or operations were impacted." media, citing a White House official, reported Trump was working in the Oval Office alongside aides Steven Cheung, Natalie Harp, Margo Martin, and others when shots were fired. Trump was subsequently briefed on the incident.
