Over Eighty Dead in Coal Mine Blast in China
(MENAFN) A deadly underground gas explosion tore through a coal mine in northern China's Shanxi province Friday evening, killing at least 82 workers, a state news agency reported Saturday.
The blast struck the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan county while 247 miners were underground. Emergency teams remained on-site as rescue operations pressed forward and officials moved to determine the full toll of the disaster. A formal investigation into the cause has been initiated.
President Xi Jinping directed authorities to mount an all-out rescue effort for those still missing and ordered urgent medical care for survivors, while demanding rigorous accountability for those responsible. He called on officials nationwide to extract lessons from the tragedy, reinforce workplace safety oversight, and root out hidden risks before similar disasters occur.
Premier Li Qiang ordered improved coordination of rescue efforts and called for a broad safety audit across high-risk industries. Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing was dispatched to Qinyuan to directly oversee emergency response and recovery operations on the ground.
