Bolivia Arrests Dozens Amid Clashes in Anti-Government Protests
(MENAFN) Bolivian authorities said on Saturday that 57 people were detained following clashes between security forces and anti-government demonstrators amid rising unrest linked to the country’s worsening economic situation, according to reports.
Media outlets reported that miners, Indigenous communities, teachers, students, and workers gathered around the administrative capital, La Paz, where they set up roadblocks and confronted police forces.
Authorities also said that three people died after blockades reportedly restricted access to hospitals. Meanwhile, 57 individuals accused of involvement in violent incidents were taken into custody, according to government statements.
Security forces deployed tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds, while protesters responded by throwing stones and Molotov cocktails during the confrontations.
Government spokesperson Jose Luis Galvez said a joint deployment of around 3,500 police officers and military personnel was launched to dismantle the barricades.
He added that the operation aimed to restore the delivery of food, medical supplies, and oxygen to hospitals, noting that security operations were still ongoing.
