Boko Haram Abducts Forty-Two Students in Attack on School in Nigeria

(MENAFN) At least 42 students were reportedly abducted in northeastern Nigeria after an attack attributed to Boko Haram targeted a school in Borno state, according to a Nigerian senator, as stated by reports.

Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South in the National Assembly, said the students were taken during the assault on a school in the Askira-Uba area on May 15.

Local reporting indicated that the attack hit a government day secondary school in Mussa village, where armed individuals stormed the area during early morning classes.

Ndume described the incident as deeply distressing for families, saying, “The school abduction is more terrifying because it happened when poor and resilient students were engaged in their early morning classes,” according to his statement.

He also called on security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army, to intensify efforts to locate and rescue the abducted students.

Nigeria has faced long-standing insecurity linked to armed groups, including Boko Haram and the ISIS-affiliated ISWAP, which have operated across multiple regions for years.

According to reports, Boko Haram has been active since the early 2000s, with mass violence since 2009 leading to tens of thousands of deaths.

Authorities have continued counterinsurgency efforts involving military deployments and cooperation with international partners.

It was also reported that the United States deployed around 100 military personnel to northern Nigeria in February to support training, intelligence sharing, and technical assistance amid rising attacks.
