South Korean Official Downplays Non-Iranian Role in Hormuz Vessel Attack

(MENAFN) South Korean officials have said it is unlikely that a non-Iranian actor was involved in the attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, while stressing that investigations are still ongoing, according to reports citing news agency.

A senior Foreign Ministry official stated that while other possibilities are not completely ruled out, “There may still be a possibility of another actor besides Iran, but common sense suggests it is not high. There were no pirates nearby,” according to reports.

South Korea recently concluded that an explosion and fire aboard the cargo ship HMM Namu on May 4 were caused by two unidentified airborne objects. The government strongly condemned the incident and pledged a full investigation to determine responsibility.

Officials also indicated that Seoul expects an “appropriate response” from Iran if further findings point in that direction, according to reports.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said the government would carry out additional investigations and take necessary diplomatic steps as needed.
