Russia Claims Violations of Victory Day Truce by Ukrainian Forces
(MENAFN) The Russian Defense Ministry has stated that Ukrainian forces violated a Victory Day ceasefire more than 16,000 times since it came into effect on Friday.
In a statement released on Sunday, the ministry alleged that Ukrainian military activity included drone and artillery strikes on multiple regions, including Crimea and several border areas such as Belgorod, Kursk, Kaluga, Rostov, and Krasnodar. It further claimed that civilian areas were among the targets, with regional officials reporting injuries in Belgorod, including a teenager among those wounded in drone attacks.
The ministry also reported that Ukrainian forces carried out hundreds of strikes against Russian positions using artillery, rocket systems, mortars, and tanks. In addition, it said thousands of drone attacks were launched, along with several attempted assaults on Russian defensive positions.
According to the statement, a total of 16,071 ceasefire violations were recorded during the period in question. Russian forces, it added, responded in what was described as a proportional manner by targeting firing positions, drone launch sites, and command facilities.
At the same time, the ministry maintained that Russian troops continued to observe the ceasefire and held their positions without advancing.
The truce was introduced by Russia to coincide with Victory Day commemorations marking the end of World War II in Europe. It was initially set to expire on Sunday but was reportedly extended by two additional days following a proposal attributed to US President Donald Trump.
The Defense Ministry also referenced previous temporary ceasefires announced during religious and national holidays, including an Easter truce earlier in the year, which it said was also violated thousands of times within a short period.
