UK Says West Bank Settlement Expansion Threatens Two-State Solution
(MENAFN) The United Kingdom warned Friday that expanding Israeli settlements and increasing violence in the occupied West Bank are weakening the chances of achieving a two-state solution, as international diplomats met at the United Nations to address deteriorating conditions for Palestinians.
During an Arria-formula session at UN headquarters in New York, James Kariuki, charge d’affaires at the UK mission to the UN, said Britain remains concerned about growing instability across the region.
“I want to underline UK concern at rising conflict in the region and beyond,” Kariuki told diplomats, adding, “I also want to stress that peaceful coexistence between communities is essential.”
He reiterated the UK’s long-standing position supporting a negotiated settlement based on two states, one Israeli and one Palestinian.
“The United Kingdom is clear that a two-state solution remains the only way to achieve lasting peace and security for the Israeli and Palestinian people,” he said.
