US Approves Major Defense Sales to Gulf Nations
(MENAFN) The US Department of State announced on Friday that it has authorized a series of military equipment and support sales to Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. These approvals reflect ongoing defense cooperation between Washington and its Gulf partners.
Among the deals, Qatar may receive Patriot Air and Missile Defense system replenishment services along with associated equipment, in a package valued at approximately $4.01 billion. In addition, the country has been cleared for a potential purchase of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS), estimated at $992 million.
The United Arab Emirates is also included in the APKWS approval, with a prospective sale worth $147.6 million. Meanwhile, Kuwait has been granted authorization for the possible acquisition of an Integrated Battle Command System, a deal valued at around $2.5 billion.
These developments come at a time of heightened instability in the region. The announcement follows the launch of strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28, which triggered retaliatory actions from Tehran targeting US allies in the Gulf, as well as the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.
