Bahrain King Issues New Citizenship Revocations Order Over Iran

(MENAFN) Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued a directive Friday ordering authorities to strip citizenship from additional individuals accused of supporting Iranian attacks against the kingdom, escalating a crackdown that began earlier this week.

The order, as reported by media, followed Monday's announcement that 69 individuals — including family members — had already been denaturalized for allegedly sympathizing with and praising Iranian aggression.

The king characterized Iran's actions as a "sinful Iranian aggression" targeting the kingdom's security, stability, and population, declaring that the attacks had exposed those who "sold their conscience to the enemy." He called on Tehran to cease interfering in the internal affairs of Bahrain and other Gulf nations, and expressed sharp disapproval over reports that certain legislators had opposed the citizenship-stripping measures.

The king questioned how officials entrusted by the public could stand alongside those he called traitors rejected by public opinion, according to the agency.

His remarks appeared directed at Shiite lawmakers who, according to social media reports, had resisted legislation enabling citizenship revocations — though no official confirmation of this opposition was issued.

The king framed citizenship as a binding covenant rather than a formal document, stating that those who violate it forfeit it, and ordered the removal of all individuals deemed to have cooperated with Iranian aggression.

Parliament Speaker Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam echoed the king's position, declaring that the legislature would not tolerate members who justify actions harmful to the nation's supreme interests.

Bahrain's High Criminal Court convened its first session on March 9 for defendants charged with promoting Iranian hostile acts. Bahrain and several other Arab states were struck by Iranian missiles and drones in retaliation for a military campaign by Israel and the United States against Iran between late February and early April. While Iran maintained it targeted US interests in the region, strikes hit civilian infrastructure and caused casualties, drawing condemnation from affected nations.
