Iraq Begins First Oil Exports to Syria via Reopened Border Crossing
(MENAFN) Iraq has carried out its first crude oil shipment to Syria via the recently reopened Rabia–Al-Yarubiya border crossing, marking a new phase in cross-border trade, according to reports.
The operation involved an initial convoy of 70 tanker trucks, as announced by the Border Crossings Authority and cited by an Iraqi news agency. Officials said the shipment was completed under established regulatory and security procedures with direct government supervision.
Authority head Omar Al-Waeli said the initiative is intended to ease congestion at other export routes, broaden Iraq’s oil marketing options, and increase national revenue streams.
He added that plans are underway to expand the crossing’s operational capacity, including infrastructure upgrades and improved logistical systems in anticipation of higher future activity.
Al-Waeli also highlighted the strategic importance of land-based oil exports, noting that the route provides an alternative distribution channel that reduces certain risks associated with traditional export pathways while improving flexibility.
The Rabia–Al-Yarubiya crossing was reopened on April 20 after remaining closed for 13 years due to security conditions linked to the conflict in Syria, according to reports.
