Over 2,000 Power Sites Hit in U.S.-Israeli Strikes on Iran

(MENAFN) More than 2,000 locations across Iran's electricity network were struck during recent U.S.-Israeli military operations, a senior Iranian energy official revealed Wednesday, offering the most detailed account yet of the attacks' toll on the country's critical infrastructure.

Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, deputy energy minister for electricity and energy, disclosed that 12 power sector employees lost their lives during the strikes, framing the assault as a deliberate campaign to cripple essential civilian systems. "Attacking electricity infrastructure is an attack on the people," he said in remarks carried by a semi-official news agency.

Despite the staggering scale of destruction, Rajabi Mashhadi said repair crews managed to restore power in the majority of affected areas within the hour — a feat he attributed to Iran's vast electricity workforce. He noted that around 150,000 personnel operate within the sector, including 30,000 working in round-the-clock shifts to keep the grid operational.

The human cost extended beyond the energy sector. In a separate statement, Aladdin Rafizadeh, head of Iran's Administrative and Recruitment Affairs Organization, said 68 administrative personnel were killed while on duty during the recent war, according to a state news agency.

The disclosures carry added weight given prior warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump, who had threatened to strike Iran's civilian infrastructure — including power plants and bridges — if diplomatic negotiations failed to produce an agreement.

The current crisis was ignited on Feb. 28, when Washington and Tel Aviv launched coordinated strikes against Iran, triggering a wave of retaliatory attacks by Tehran against U.S. military assets and bases scattered across the Middle East. A ceasefire was brokered on April 8, followed by a rare face-to-face round of talks between U.S. and Iranian delegations in Islamabad on April 11–12 — meetings that ended without a breakthrough.

The truce has since been extended as both sides continue cautious diplomatic maneuvering, though the underlying tensions show little sign of abating.
