China Is Concerned Over US Boarding of Iranian Ship in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) According to reports, China has expressed “concern” following an incident in which US forces boarded an Iranian cargo ship in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, urging all sides to avoid further escalation.
As stated by reports, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized the importance of the waterway, noting that “Strait of Hormuz is an important” route for global trade, and that maintaining its safety and stability “serves the interests of international community.”
“On the US taking the (Iranian) ship by force, we express our concern,” said Guo, calling for restraint between the parties involved.
Reports indicate that Beijing’s reaction followed an announcement by Donald Trump, who stated that US naval forces intercepted and disabled an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel attempting to breach a blockade in the Gulf of Oman. According to reports, US Marines have since taken control of the ship.
As stated by reports, the USS Spruance carried out the interception after the vessel, identified as the Touska, reportedly ignored repeated warnings to halt.
According to reports, China has urged both the United States and Iran to “fulfil their obligations, abide by the ceasefire, to prevent escalation and provide necessary conditions for re-normalization of the strait,” while also calling on both sides to “maintain momentum of ceasefire, continue to promote de-escalation” in pursuit of a political resolution.
